There is also the situation with some of his police officers taking bribes to unlawfully incarcerate vulnerable citizens of Candlestick.

Mattie’s plans to wrest control of the Case businesses are put on hold when the life of a dear friend is threatened. Her investigation of others suffering a similar fate will test her courage as she storms a frightful asylum to gather evidence. Effie’s true identity is kept hidden even as word of her innocence is published. It doesn’t stop her from risking exposure as she does whatever she may to discover the location of her missing son.

Chief of police Garth Hawke wonders if he can trust anyone around him. One thing is obvious. No one in the city of Candlestick appears to trust him. He hopes that will change over time. His plan to win them over is simple. He just needs to do a better job than his predecessor. Given the sensational circumstances under which Henry Case lost his life, it shouldn’t be that difficult.
