The festivities at the annual Ferry Fair in 1923 are thrown into turmoil when the ubiquitous Burry Man, a pagan-dressed, whiskey-nipping character who routinely offends the stricter members of the community, from the minister to the temperance pamphleteer, falls dead from poisoning while handing out prizes.
